Hello, it’s Claudia here! Today I want to give you a little peek behind the scenes—what my days look like as a stay-at-home mom and business owner. Last weekend was one of those busy weekends, and I thought it would be fun to share it with you.
Apple Strudel Sampling
Last Saturday, I hosted an apple strudel sampling. People were able to order slices ahead of time to try the classic Austrian apple strudel. Some had tasted it before, some never had—it was my goal to give everyone the full strudel experience.
I baked the strudel fresh and timed it perfectly: I took them out of the oven just a few minutes before the sampling started. That’s when strudel tastes the best—warm, flaky, and fragrant. Sometimes I get a little jealous when I bake strudel at home, because the smell fills the house but there’s nothing left for us to eat—haha, that’s a baker’s life, right? But this time I planned a few slices for my family… spoiler: we only got two! One for my husband and one for me.
Besides the sampling, I also had a special apple strudel order. The customer told me that strudel had always been part of his childhood—his grandma, who was from Germany, baked it for the family. Later, he texted me that my strudel reminded him of his grandmother’s, just a little bigger. That’s what I love about baking: creating memories and bringing joy through food. Nothing is better than that feedback!
How I Balance Baking and Family Life
Since we have a one-year-old, I can’t spend the whole day in the kitchen. Family time is just as important as baking, so planning is everything. Here’s what Saturday looked like for me:
4:00 am: Wake up, prepare strudel dough, quick breakfast
45-minute run and shower: Sport always helps me reduce stress and clears my mind so I can focus on work
More dough prep, then start outdoor decoration for a birthday cake
Make breakfast for my little one and enjoy family time until nap
Apple strudel filling prep—thankfully my husband helped peel the apples
Stretching, filling, and rolling 4 strudels one by one
Clean up and prep sampling boxes, labels, thank-you cards, and Instagram QR code stickers
By 1 pm, the sampling started. Everyone picked up their fresh, hot strudel, and I even shared some with neighbors. At the end, there were just two slices left for our family—perfect!
Birthday Cakes and Sweet Moments
Besides strudel, I also had a birthday cake order for Saturday and one for Sunday. The Saturday cake was for a woman who wanted to surprise her German husband with a European vanilla strawberry cake. When she told me later, he loved it! He said the cake was not too sweet and tasted amazing.
Sunday was a bit calmer with one custom cake for a first birthday. I had already made a birthday cake for the sibling before, so it was wonderful to bake again for the same family.
Feedback and Joy
After the sampling, I received so much feedback. Everyone loved the warm, flaky strudel that wasn’t too sweet but perfectly balanced. Honestly, Saturday was stressful, but chatting with people and seeing how much they enjoyed the strudel and cakes made everything worth it.
This is what makes my work so special—creating memories and joy through food. That connection, that smile, that little moment when someone tastes something you made and it brings them happiness—that’s what baking is really about.
Sunday and Behind-the-Scenes Business
Sunday was a little quieter. Besides the birthday cake, I also prepared decorations for upcoming cakes, wrote invoices, calculated prices for new offers, and handled other small business tasks. Being a mom and a baker means balancing family, business, and passion every day—but it’s a challenge I absolutely love.
The Heart of Alpin Delights
Weekends like this remind me why I started Alpin Delights. It’s not just about making cakes and pastries—it’s about sharing joy, culture, and moments with others. Every cake, strudel, or treat is made with love, high-quality ingredients, and a lot of care.
Thank you for joining me behind the scenes! I hope this gave you a little insight into what it’s like to be a baker, mom, and all-around multi-tasker. Until next time, happy baking!
Claudia
