Hello, today I want to talk about one of my absolute favorite things—custom cakes. There’s something truly magical about creating a cake that’s made just for someone special. Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, or any other celebration, a custom cake is more than a dessert—it’s a gift of creativity, thoughtfulness, and love.
For example, just last weekend I made two custom birthday cakes. One was for a 9-year-old boy who wanted a Fortnite cake. To be honest, I had to Google it first—haha! Challenge accepted. I researched the theme, thought about what would fit best, and visualized the entire cake in my head before touching any fondant or tools. Being very visual really helps me—I can “see” the cake before it exists, and try different decoration ideas in my mind before starting.
I use a mix of textures depending on the design: fondant, wafer paper, rice paper, and sometimes even sweets. For instance, the week before, I made a Wildfire-themed cake decorated with roasted marshmallows—check it out on Instagram [@AlpinDelights]. To save time and reduce costs (because handcrafting everything with fondant is labor-intensive), we often combine a beautiful cake topper with handmade decorations. It’s the perfect balance, and the Fortnite cake turned out amazing—the boy loved it! That’s exactly what I hope for every time.
The other cake was for a 4-year-old girl who wanted Elsa from Frozen. This one I knew immediately how to approach. I created different sizes, textures, and colors for snowflakes, used rice paper for the ice mountains, and added little “bubbles” in different shades of blue and white as a fun extra touch. I also bought an Elsa cake topper—actually, I tried two until I found the perfect one. The result? The girl was absolutely in love with her cake! I always wish I could see the kids’ first reaction—it must be priceless—but the parents always let me know, and that’s the next best thing. Seeing their joy and excitement is what makes all the creativity, planning, and effort worth it. Custom cakes are more than just desserts—they create memories for the family, little moments that everyone will remember and treasure.
